The Tropea Sweet Red Onion is one of the sweetest red onions in the world and is the onion with the lowest lacrimal factor, the onion that does not make you cry. It has a slightly elongated shape and a deep red, wine colour. The onion itself is not only famous in Italy, but is known all over Europe for its unusually sweet and mild flavour. During the harvesting season this is the most sought after onion in all of Europe. In 2008, the European Union registered the Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) mark for the onions produced in this particular area.
Preserving the onions in olive oil keeps the authentic genuine taste of these exquisite onions. Tropea red onions are particularly recommended as antipasti or starters and also as garnish with beef and game dishes.
