Sicilian Marzipan Fruits

Olive Points: 99pts

Price £9.90

Weight: 200g

Well known and loved throughout Italy these ‘Frutta Martorana’ are made with local organic almonds by our friends at Donna Elvira in Modica on the south of the island. This delicious Sicilian speciality is said to have originated at the Martorana Monastery near Palermo where nuns decorated empty fruit trees with colourful marzipan oranges, mandarins and lemons to impress a visiting archbishop at Easter time!

Realistically coloured with vegetable dyes and shaped like fruits and vegetables, these hand-made marzipan sweets are wonderful as a gift or look amazing displayed on the table as a special after dinner treat!

Please note that this particular type of marzipan has quite a hard texture, so different to the marzipan fruits you may find in the UK.

Avola almonds, organic cane sugar, natural colours.

I bought these marzipan fruits as a change this Easter, although I believe they are traditionally given on 31 October (all souls day) in Italy. We have visited Modica about 10 years ago and had forgotten just how wonderful these marzipan fruits are. Not only are they mini works of art they taste delicious, unlike the more traditional marzipan the almond taste is slightly milder, but that's why I love them so much, a lovely way to end a meal with an espresso is purely heavenly!

Richly almond flavoured, these are not the marzipan fruits we know in the U.K. These were almost a cross between the texture of icing & the flavour of marzipan. The fruits themselves have almost a sweet crust on the outside, with softer marzipan inside. I was initially surprised, being used to the very soft versions we have here, but loved them by the next bite !
