This unique Italian condiment from northern Italy is prepared with freshly picked, finely sliced figs which are left to caramelize for four days. A few drops of mustard seed oil are added to give the mostarda a perfect balance of sweet and spicy, the syrup is dense and the fruit crunchy.
The sweet yet 'piccante' mustard taste is perfect with cheeses such as Gorgonzola, Roquefort, or Stilton and also with also with pâté or a liver terrine.
To spread the mustard flavour evenly it is best to stir it in the jar before serving. Including a few small pieces of with each serving will help enhance the flavour. If the mostarda is too hot it can be emptied into a bowl and left to sit for a while.
